Enhancing the quality of research administration.

MISSION: To establish a hub of excellence for Research Administrators in Africa by linking research institutions to facilitate the effective sharing of best practices.

The purpose of the ARAA is to serve as a professional forum for health Research Administrators in Africa for discussions, trainings, analysis, and benchmarking best practices as well as providing solutions to global health research and development challenges. The idea of the ARAA is based on the need for Research Administrators in Africa to organize themselves, share experiences and accumulated knowledge in dealing with the administrative challenges. African issues are best and most cost-effectively tackled with solutions from Africa. The development of cost effective, inclusive, and viable initiatives like the ARAA hub will play a significant role in fostering a sustainable research environment in Africa.

GOALS:

(1) Formation of an effective network of Research Administrators in Africa

Strategies:

The ARAA will…

  • Perform an environmental scan of research institutions to find out the research administration needs of various institutions and how to meet them.
  • Build an individual and institutional membership base.
  • Link research institutions in Africa to share ideas and best practices.
  • Improve communication among Research Administrators, investigators, and other members of research teams in Africa.
  • Forge partnerships with relevant stakeholders in Africa and beyond based on mutual interest and complimentary strength.

(2) African ownership

Strategies:

The ARAA will…

  • Identify and solve uniquely African problems of successful research administration.
  • Broaden understanding of the challenges of the research administrator in Africa and advance appropriate solutions.
  • Establish a leadership structure with deep understanding of African research issues.
  • Enhance the establishment of functional offices of research support in all member institutions.

(3) Sustainability

Strategies:

The ARAA will…

  • Develop sustainable mechanisms for resource mobilizations.
  • Establish a meaningful association to attract and foster long-term membership.

(4) Professional development

Strategies:

The ARAA will…

  • Identify and fill gaps that exist in research administration as a profession.
  • Build excellence and professionalism in the career of research administration in order to eventually nurture a professional identity for research administration.
